BNSF Railway Foundation was presented the Outstanding Foundation award by the Topeka Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals at its annual National Philanthropy Day celebration. In addition to direct financial support, this award recognizes Foundations that, through their philanthropic efforts, enable organizations to accomplish specific achievements and encourage others to take on leadership roles within their community.
BNSF Railway’s mission is to support and improve the general welfare and quality of life for communities across the 28 states in which BNSF operates. This spring the Foundation provided the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library and United Way of Greater Topeka much needed funds to bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to the children in our community. In an effort to help every child be ready for kindergarten, this program promotes early childhood literacy by giving free age-appropriate books to children from birth to age five.
The Foundation also supports numerous area non-profits including The Nature Conservancy/Kansas Chapter, Topeka Community Foundation, Topeka Civic Theatre, Friends of the Topeka Zoo and more. BNSF employees also host fundraising campaigns for various non-profits each month and for the past five years, they have provided 100 less fortunate Shawnee County children with an unforgettable Christmas train ride.
Their Topeka Mechanical Shop also hosts fundraising campaigns for organizations like Kansas Children’s Service League, March of Dimes and Ronald McDonald House Charities of North East Kansas. BNSF Railway Foundation and the employees of BNSF are examples of how philanthropy can make a positive impact on a community.
National Philanthropy Day is a celebration of philanthropy—giving, volunteering and charitable engagement—that highlights the accomplishments, large and small, that philanthropy—and all those involved in the philanthropic process—makes to our society and our world.
